New Year, New Me
I’m sorry for abandoning you for so long. College is very busy, but to be honest, I kind of lost interest in my blog; I had nothing to write about and I’m not very into activism anymore. But this beautiful woman inspired me to write a post for the new year. She inspired me to take a stand. To take a stand by just being me and not letting the things that have presented difficulties in my life define me. To take a stand against those hardships by giving the finger to the universe and just living my life how I want.
I just watched a beautiful TEDx talk given by the “World’s Ugliest Woman.” Lizzie has a rare syndrome that does not allow her to gain weight. I know, first thing I thought was “well it can’t be all that bad if you can eat whatever the hell you want and not gain anything!” But Lizzie struggled with bullies who did not see the beauty that I saw in her.
She doesn’t let her syndrome define her. She is 24 years old and has weighed no more than 64lb her entire life, but she still doesn’t let it bring her down. She wanted to become a motivational speaker, and damn it, Lizzie, you do a really stellar job.
Being LGBT doesn’t define you. You don’t need to wear a “Hi, my name is …” sticker everywhere you go. You are no different from before you came out, aside from maybe feeling more comfortable with yourself after embracing this new aspect of your identity.
I am not the same kid who this jerks bullied in middle school. Hell, I’m not the same person that I was 6 months ago. I’m consistently changing, as are all of you. That’s life. We change. Our identities morph over time. Somethings change, others remain the same. Don’t be married to who you are because you could love what you didn’t used to like.
Yeah, I’m gay, but gay isn’t me. Do I like women? Aw yeah I do. But I’m so much more than my sexual preference! I’m a daughter, sister, friend, student, musician, lover, Batman enthusiast, and so much more. I am not my sexuality and I am not my struggles. I am Carly and I’m learning to like me.
Sorry for not writing for awhile, but hey, I always come back around :)

Take a look at her video, it’s quite amazing.
